Terminology Guide

Definitions of the terms and concepts used throughout the Quarvenford platform and this website. Intended as a reference for users who are new to the service or unfamiliar with information-organisation terminology.

The following table defines terms as they are used within Quarvenford specifically. Some terms have broader meanings in general usage; the definitions below describe how each term applies within the context of this platform.

Term Definition within Quarvenford
Classification The process by which the platform assigns an information item to a category within the active classification schema. Classification is performed automatically by the platform's internal logic, subject to the schema rules in effect for the user's context.
Classification schema A defined set of categories, hierarchies, and assignment rules that governs how information items are classified within a particular context. A schema may be predefined for a specific user group or configured through a support arrangement.
Category A named grouping within a classification schema into which information items can be assigned. Categories may be arranged in hierarchies, with broader parent categories containing more specific child categories.
Category tree The hierarchical structure of categories within a schema, displayed in the platform interface as a navigable tree. Users can expand and collapse branches of the tree to locate specific categories of interest.
Information item A discrete unit of information submitted to or ingested by the Quarvenford platform. Each item is classified according to the active schema and becomes accessible through the review interface once classification is complete.
Review screen The interface display that presents classified information items within a selected category. Review screens show items in a consistent format to facilitate comparison and inspection.
Organised view A presentation of classified information that reflects the structure imposed by the classification process. An organised view displays items within the context of their assigned categories and any identified relationships.
Content relationship A structural link between two or more information items identified by the platform based on shared category membership, overlapping metadata, or explicit relationship definitions within the schema. Relationships are displayed as navigable links in the review interface.
Navigation pathway A route through the platform's category structure and content relationships that allows a user to move from one item or category to related content without returning to a top-level menu. Pathways are generated from the underlying information structure.
Access request A formal request submitted through the enquiry channel by a prospective user wishing to gain access to the Quarvenford platform. Access requests are reviewed by the support team and are not automatically approved.
Enquiry A message submitted to the Quarvenford support team through the enquiry form or by email. Enquiries may relate to platform functions, classification queries, access requests, or other matters. They are distinct from submissions of information to the platform itself.
Classification audit log A record maintained by the platform documenting the classification decisions applied to an information item, including the category assigned and the date of classification. The log can be consulted when raising a classification query.
Support team The Quarvenford team responsible for responding to enquiries, reviewing access requests, investigating classification queries, and providing guidance to users. The support team is contactable by email at [email protected].
Reference summary A structured output generated from a review screen that allows users to record a set of classified items for use outside the platform. The summary reflects the organised view at the time of generation and does not update automatically.
Contextual help text Explanatory text displayed within the platform interface alongside classification terms, category descriptions, and review screen elements. Help text is written in plain language to assist users who are unfamiliar with a particular term or feature.
